I do not nor do I need a receipt printer. All I want is a USB cash drawer that costs less than $235. Square, if you’re reading this, please add support for a wider variety of USB cash drawers. Your focus is small businesses. Not sure why you have only the most expensive cash drawer (more than 2x the Price of the Square Stand) as the only USB one supported). Surely it can’t be that hard to come up with new drivers?
Another nice touch is that they include a CD which allows you to customize the printer (add logos, sync with POS systems, custom data to add once the receipt is printed, etc). Keep in mind though, this customization works with certain POS systems, not all. On Square, I can’t tell the printer to print out all of the extra stuff since the POS for Square is very simplified.
When you connect to the USB Receipt Printer or Ethernet Receipt Printer with the included cable, the cash drawer will open every time you complete a cash sale. Or use the included keys to manually open.
I have my own iPad 2 and square stand. I was Looking for compatible hardware and this was excellent. The register and printer work great, I even ordered more papers for the printer so we will use it long term.
I’d like to take a step back from discussing integration challenges to mention a few examples from the Square Register code base that made my life easier for this project. The code separates operations looking for connected peripherals and interacting with them and uses abstract superclasses to provide a consistent API to the rest of the app. Because the code was so robust, my new printer code fit well into the rest of the app, and existing code used by other printers fit well into my own new code. One good example is our receipt image renderer. The renderer works by putting data into an HTML document styled by CSS, rendering that HTML into an unseen web view and then rendering the view into PNG image data that can be sent to the printer. The HTML and CSS scale to fit different-sized windows and thus are a good generalizable solution for multiple print widths. All of the printers that we had previously supported (WiFi and USB printers) printed three-inch wide receipts. However most of the Bluetooth printers I worked with use two-inch wide paper. Thanks to the flexibility of our renderer, all I had to do was set the correct print width of a printer and voilà — the receipts were seamlessly resized and looked great.

I know that the Square corporate line is that the APG Vasario VB554A-BL1616 is the only USB cash drawer that works with the Square Stand hub (which means you don’t need a printer, which is what I want). I am wondering if anyone has experience using a different, less expensive USB drawer with the Square Stand and USB hub?

You can add your logo and text to your receipt. This is done with software that is included with the receipt printer. By adding your logo to your receipts you have a place to advertise your business. You can also put your phone number on your receipt or your website URL. This is a good thing to do if you’re selling at a craft show, fair, farmers market and etc. The customer may not remember your name and may not go online to search for your website. But if you put your website on the receipt you have a better chance of the customers visiting your website to make a purchase.

If you want a small and easy to carry receipt printer, this may be it. It weighs less than half a pound. It is easy to carry around. For people who sell at craft shows, farmers markets and historical fairs this may be the receipt printer.
Last but not least, though I’m enough of a geek that the code itself would have been interesting and fun for me, it was really special getting to see first-hand how the product truly helped people. Meeting a merchant who had previously only been able to give out handwritten receipts, handing her a Bluetooth printer, and seeing how our new feature would make her job easier was the highlight of my summer.
An update 11/21/15 Had it working fine with Amazon local register until Amazon shut it down, so bought the PayPal chip and card reader- the updated paypal iOs app will not print to this printer. (iOs 9.1/ iPad 3). The workaround I found was to turn this printer in to an airprint printer- it’s a bit of a hack, instructions are out there, problem being you must have a host computer on the network. To be clear- this is a PayPal issue- not a fault of the printer.
There are three main types of receipt printers: Inkjet, Dot-matrix, and Thermal. Dot-matrix printers have a small printing head that moves either in an up and down or side to side motion. Like a typewriter, this printer depends on the impact of the head against the paper to produce characters. The head hits a cloth ribbon that is covered in ink, and then impresses a character onto the paper. It creates characters through a series of thousands of tiny dots, which is how it gets its name. One concern with Dot-matrix printers is that the ribbon must frequently be replaced. Inkjet printers use tiny ink guns to create their characters, instead of impact. The guns shoot little dots of ink at the paper, but the dots are so minuscule that people cannot detect them inside of the characters.
We really like the Apple MFi certification with the auto connect feature. We also like the small footprint of this receipt printer. Overall this is one easy and fast printer to setup. The Apple MFi makes it real easy. You just turn the printer on within range of your iPad.

I already had the square reader and just was tired of it being in other spots or being charged. The dock was a great addition to the square stand and the printer. Very easy to use. Just attach to the square stand and put the reader in. The dock has weight to it so i dont have to worry about it falling especially in the spot i put it. Definitely reccomend

Unless proven otherwise, I agree. And in my business, giving a client a receipt on what amounts to a piece of adding machine paper is unprofessional. I should be able to use any printer that is compatible with the iPad, not just the uni-tasker receipt printers.
As a bluetooth only device, it is a bit glitchy. If you are wanting to use it with a phone/tablet only as a standalone device, look elsewhere. The miura m010 reader works great for this, though is unfortunately not available on amazon.

I have a friend who runs a small shop and knew the Esky ES-CD01 Heavy Duty RJ-12 Key-Lock Cash Drawer would be perfect for his application. This drawer was a massive upgrade to the system he had been using. He had tried other drawers with different connections and designs, however this one was really the best.
The rest of the peripheral library code was also reusable. Admittedly, our deep class hierarchy was rather intimidating when I first came to Square, but it ended up being possibly my greatest resource in writing this feature. At the highest level, Register has a Peripheral class to model every hardware device we support. It includes common properties like manufacturer name, model name, and its connection state. At the next level down is the Printer class, which encapsulates printer-specific information like the kind of data it can print and its print width, as well as abstract methods for printing images and text. Having this infrastructure in place made the design of the Bluetooth printer class clearer, and provided a clean, generic API for the rest of the app to use to print images and text to any printer, leaving the low-level details of the printer communication to the subclasses.
The Epsilont Star Bundle comes with a complete mounting kit for quick and easy installation. It uses simple heat to print on the paper, which eliminates the annoying need to change the cartridge and saves you some cash on ink and energy.

A simple print button on the tablet application would allow us to connect to a local or network printer and print the same form data. Why is this still impossible? Why can we still not utilize our desktop or local printers to print receipt data from the app?
**Please note, this is the bluetooth version of this printer is not currently supported by Square with Android Devices, only iOS. We have other versions of the printer that will work with Square on Android in our catalog.
The printer that Square supports is one of the largest used brands in the receipt printer market. They are not getting kickbacks on printers as the printers are sold by hundreds of places including Amazon, and the buyer doesn’t know you are buying it to print with Square as the printer is also used by 100s of other POS systems. More printer options would always be better, but as this is one of the industry standard printers it only makes sense they support it.
