Hi @McNabbGames — I went ahead and combined your thread with another seller’s who had a similar question. I can assure you that we’re always looking into more affordable hardware options for our sellers. As for the technical explanation, from my limited understanding (I’m not an engineer), each printer manufacturer has a specific driver for their hardware, and since manufacturers don’t build printer drivers for Square Point of Sale, we would have to build one for each printer model – which is something we don’t have the bandwidth to do.
If you accept credit card payments from your customers at your place of business, you’ll want a receipt printer. A receipt printer automatically prints a receipt for your customer when they make a purchase.

Beyond successful software installations — and mysterious failings “printer not available” after initially printing the test page or failing to print after several hours of successful hours of operation, there’s the interesting phenomenon of an attempted install on a couple of machines in which after selecting the ‘easy install’ or appropriate options under the standard install, and then clicking ‘install’ — nothing happens. Click again. Nothing happens: no messaging, no installation, nothing. I find this inexplicable and suspect that most software/driver developers — with the evident exception of Epson — wouldn’t allow a feature this flawed into release.

This is an impact printer. So it makes a noise when it prints. Why would you want this? You might want it if you are in an area such as a kitchen where thermal paper receipts don’t print as well because of moisture in the area. You would not want this noise around customers. But if you have a moist area such as a busy kitchen this printer may be what you can use. Here is the user manual for the Star Micronics SP742ML.
The STAR MICRONICS SM-T300I is also a light weight receipt printer. But it’s very durable and rugged. It’s also Apple MFi certified for iOS phone and iPads. It also works with Android and Windows. It’s been tested to take a little bit of beating and is used by people who are outside a lot. Having said that the price is higher than other printers. If you need something rugged, this device may be the one for you. But if you don’t. You will want to look at something else as this device can get expensive. The SM-T300i is easy to use. There is a well written and very detailed user manual. The user manual gives details on how to configure the receipt printer and how to load paper. Here is a link to the Star Micronics SM-T300i User Manual.
This product worked well the first 4 weeks with the Square POS and the past few days the printer has not been printing continuously. The iPad states, “Printer Error” and the printer must be shut off and paper drawer opened up and turned back on again. There are NO returns on this item through Amazon so buyers please be aware. I am in the process of working directly with Star Micronics.
This is an easy and entry level printer. Getting going is fast. The price is reasonable at generally less than $200. We rate this high for a receipt printer if you want something easy to use that does the job a thermal printer should do.
So let me get this straight; after I email/text the customer the receipt I should then email it to myself and then print it from my email (after formatting if I like)? Can’t I just print from the app without buying a special credit card printer? Guess not…
Bluetooth has become a very popular option when it comes to connecting a receipt printer to a PC, tablet, or smart-phone.  It is especially useful when connecting to a device that does not have a full sized USB port such as an iPad.
The printer is fine but bluetooth connectivity has been an incredible challenge. We have probably wasted 20 hours wrestling with it in the few weeks we have had it. The Starprint utility can say it is not connected when it is … and vice versa. The Bluetooth says it is not connected yet we can print a receipt from the register. The delay communicating via bluetooth means we have to leave a key in teh till drawer rather than wait for it to eventually open even though we have adjusted the utility and timing. So, while the printer is fine, don’t go bluetooth because you can’t use a cable even if you want to as there’s no socket …. just bluetooth ! So, buy a cable printer version and be happier !
This is one of the more common thermal receipt printers used with Square Payments. It generally costs less than $200. It come in white and black color. It has an auto-cutter to slice thermal receipt paper for you. It uses thermal paper so you never never need to fill it with ink. It is generally easy to maintain and add paper when you need it. So this is a printer that works well in a wide variety of environments. However, if you are in a kitchen or some area where the air is moist you may want to get an impact printer as thermal receipt paper does not work well in moist environments where there is little ventilation. Here is the user manual for the Star Micronics SM-S230i.
Have not purchased this printer, but wanted to let people know that this is not the only printer that will work with Square. I have two Star Micronics printers, one Ethernet and one Bluetooth and both work fine with the Square app for iPad. I also have Ethernet based cash drawers that connect through the printers and those works just as well. This probably has the easiest set up, but it is not the only way.
Electronic Cash Drawer It has 5 bill trays, 5 coin trays and a bill entry, keeping your money organized and largely improve your working efficiency and accuracy. 1 Cash Drawer. Only the cash drawer is…

Run the printer self test (hold down the feed button while turning on the printer). The printer will print a list of initial settings including interface type and buffer capacity. Verify that the interface is “serial” for this type of Ethernet adapter.

Modern POS printers often feature speeds measured in inches per second, and these high-quality versions provide fast operation. They may also bear an indication of the mean time between failures, letting you know just how long you can expect the printer to provide excellent service and continued operation. These MTBF ratings can easily range into the hundreds of thousands of hours between service calls, delivering exceptional reliability.
A plug-in Bluetooth receipt printer is great for when you have a more traditional point of sale setup but don’t have an available USB port.  In these cases you can pair the printer with your tablet or PC and keep it plugged into the wall.  It’ll function like a standard receipt printer, communicating via Bluetooth.
The printer is compact, prints clearly, and has absolutely no issue when printing a receipt for my Square sales. The fact that it is blue tooth meant I could put it anywhere in my home office that was convenient and not tied down by the length of a USB cord otherwise. I have it linked up to an old iPhone 4s phone and run credit cards using Square and print receipts easily. I’m so pleased that I paid some more money and got the blue tooth version.
The first thing to do is plug the Star Micronics printer directly into an available ethernet port on your router and power up the printer. Once the printer is powered up, make sure your Android device is on the same network as is the printer. Next, fire up the Square App, log into your account, and swipe right from the left edge of the screen. From the sidebar, tap Account, and then tap Settings. The Settings window (Figure A) should list Printers — tap that and select the printer to be used.
Note: the mPOS version of the UB-E03, UB-E04 Ethernet cards are set to DHCP and will try to find an available IP address on its own the first time it appears on your network. If successful, it will print out the IP address it is using. If the address is acceptable to you then skip to section about Configuring the Computer for work with the Ethernet card.
