Contactless smart card readers use radio waves to communicate with, and both read and write data on a smart card. When used for electronic payment, they are commonly located near PIN pads, cash registers and other places of payment. When the readers are used for public transit they are commonly located on fare boxes, ticket machines, turnstiles, and station platforms as a standalone unit. When used for security, readers are usually located to the side of an entry door.
The following is an overview of the ShippingPass Pilot subscription service. You should review the Terms & Conditions for a more detailed description as well as service limitations prior to signing up for ShippingPass.
To use it, open the app (Abbreviated as “Register” in the apps menu), You enter the amount and you can have the chip reader or the swipe card thingy be used for the transaction. The app will automatically detect when it happens. Then customer signs on the smartphone. enters email for receipt (or skips). And done, in 3 days or less you got your deposit ready for withdrawal. Customers already familiar with it, make transactions faster than cash, and I’ve notice sales have gone up, despite the 2.75% current charge (as of 11/01/16).
Fully mobile receipt printers are very useful for on the go receipt printing applications such as deliveries, conventions, or craft fairs.  These mobile printers generally use receipt paper that is 2 inches wide with a smaller core.   Check the printer accessories for compatible thermal receipt paper.
The Square Chip Card Reader costs $29, and lets you accept payments from older magtripe cards and newer chipped credit cards. If you register for an account, Square will send you a reader for free, but that model just supports magstripe cards, not the new EMV security standard. This tiny white plastic square that plugs into the headphone jack of your device is by far the most aesthetically pleasing reader I’ve tested. When connected, it can immediately start accepting payments. The system works over Wi-Fi or a cell phone data connection. It’s also battery-powered and sports a micro USB port for charging. I tested the dongle on a Motorola Moto X.
A contactless smart card is a contactless credential whose dimensions are credit-card size. Its embedded integrated circuits can store (and sometimes process) data and communicate with a terminal via NFC. Commonplace uses include transit tickets, bank cards and passports.

I have two businesses and both of them use these T20s, they are super fast printers. No more dealing with off-brand junk. This printer is the real deal and the auto cut works every time. I would purchase again for sure.
To compare, 2.75 percent of $21,000 is $577.50, which is $302.50 higher than the old monthly fee. If you can swipe all the transactions, then the only way to keep your fees with Square under that $275 number is to process no more than $10,000 in monthly transactions. Not exactly a smart goal for an entrepreneur.

So let me get this straight; after I email/text the customer the receipt I should then email it to myself and then print it from my email (after formatting if I like)? Can’t I just print from the app without buying a special credit card printer? Guess not…

Hi @McNabbGames — I went ahead and combined your thread with another seller’s who had a similar question. I can assure you that we’re always looking into more affordable hardware options for our sellers. As for the technical explanation, from my limited understanding (I’m not an engineer), each printer manufacturer has a specific driver for their hardware, and since manufacturers don’t build printer drivers for Square Point of Sale, we would have to build one for each printer model – which is something we don’t have the bandwidth to do.
When you’re viewing a webpage, document or picture on your iOS device’s screen, using just a few taps of the screen you can send what you’re viewing wirelessly to your printer and be holding a hard copy in your hands within a matter of seconds.

There are two approaches to cloud printing. The first is commonly called email printing. With this method your printer is assigned an email address and any file that you email to this specific address will be printed by your Internet-connected printer.
“New employees get a flash course in using Square and it takes 15 minutes. By end of their first day, they’re really up to speed,” Idnani said. His favorite part of the Square experience is the simplicity. Square is “easy to use, easy to set up. Employees can clock in, keeping tabs on sales and analytics. I can do customer campaigns. And the fees can’t be beat.”
This is one of the more common thermal receipt printers used with Square Payments. It generally costs less than $200. It come in white and black color. It has an auto-cutter to slice thermal receipt paper for you. It uses thermal paper so you never never need to fill it with ink. It is generally easy to maintain and add paper when you need it. So this is a printer that works well in a wide variety of environments. However, if you are in a kitchen or some area where the air is moist you may want to get an impact printer as thermal receipt paper does not work well in moist environments where there is little ventilation. Here is the user manual for the Star Micronics SM-S230i.
As Wi-Fi is finding its way into more and more phones, Bluetooth printing has become less popular. Nevertheless, Bluetooth support is still a useful feature if you’ve got one of the many phones that don’t have Wi-Fi.

If your printer doesn’t have any wireless capabilities, you can still convert it by connecting it to a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth print server. Both types cost around $50-$60. As with the printers, a Bluetooth server is easier to set up but has limited range.
Using it with a Square Stand and a portable tablet, set up was easy, works perfectly. We are using it with a TP-Link Powerline Adapter AV200 model so we can put it anywhere there is power in our facility. The Square software saw it immediately and printing works great. If both stations try to print at the same time, one is buffered in the printer until the first one has finished.

The standard for contactless smart card communications is ISO/IEC 14443. It defines two types of contactless cards (“A” and “B”)[5] and allows for communications at distances up to 10 cm (3.9 in)[citation needed]. There had been proposals for ISO/IEC 14443 types C, D, E, F and G that have been rejected by the International Organization for Standardization. An alternative standard for contactless smart cards is ISO/IEC 15693, which allows communications at distances up to 50 cm (1.6 ft).
Though we are only able to guarantee that our supported printers will work with the Square register app, I definitely understand how that cost could be an issue. As the Square Register has the ability to print more than just receipts, such a kitchen tickets and order stubs, we are only able to support certain printers at this time.
The Ethernet printers compatible with Square Point of Sale are thermal printers. They call for heat-sensitive paper and won’t work with non-thermal receipt paper. These types of printers typically aren’t excellent for kitchens or high-temperature working areas.
Contactless smart cards can be used for identification, authentication, and data storage.[2] They also provide a means of effecting business transactions in a flexible, secure, standard way with minimal human intervention.

Why, for God’s sakes, can we not have a receipt that takes up a single page instead of three pages???  I’ve been a customer of square-enabled businesses for at least 4 years, and Square hasn’t come up with a solution for this?  I saw where someone asked this question in April but didn’t get any responses.  Please, please, please?  Is there some setting that everyone else in America is using, but I’m not?  Please help me.
